The Building

I.M. Pei designed the Mesa Lab to harmonize with the surrounding landscape. The brutalist concrete towers echo the Flatirons visible from every window. It's considered one of his finest works and is a destination for architecture fans.

The Exhibits

Interactive displays explain climate change, weather patterns, and atmospheric science. You'll learn how scientists study everything from hurricanes to the sun. Self-guided and guided tours available.

The Trails

The Walter Orr Roberts Trail loops behind the building through grassland with Flatiron views. The Mesa Trail connects to the broader Boulder Open Space system. Deer and wildlife are common.

Pro Tip: The cafeteria is open to the public and has surprisingly good food with mountain views. Combine NCAR with a hike on the Mesa Trail for a full day out. Free guided tours available—check their website for times.
