The Royal Arch is a natural sandstone arch tucked into the mountainside above Boulder. The arch frames stunning views of the city and plains stretching to the horizon. It's one of Boulder's most popular destinations—challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment, spectacular enough to justify the effort.
Route Description
Start on the Chautauqua Trail from the Ranger Cottage. After about 0.8 miles, turn right onto the Royal Arch Trail. The trail steepens immediately, climbing through forest on rocky terrain.
The upper section involves some light scrambling—using hands for balance on rocks. Nothing technical or exposed, but it's not a manicured path. The final approach winds through boulders before the arch appears.
At the arch, you can walk underneath and enjoy the view through the natural frame. Limited space for groups—be patient if others are there.
Trail Conditions
The trail is rocky throughout with significant elevation change in a short distance. Good hiking shoes with ankle support recommended. Trekking poles help on the descent. The trail can be slippery when wet and may have ice in winter.
Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms—start early and be off the exposed upper sections by noon. The trail is hikeable year-round but can be icy November-March.
