Fishing the Arkansas River

The Arkansas River near Buena Vista holds Gold Medal designation—Colorado's highest classification for trout waters. This means the river produces large, healthy fish in significant numbers. The combination of flows, habitat, and access makes this one of the state's premier fishing destinations.

Fly fishing dominates, but spin fishing is productive too. Both wade fishing and float fishing are popular, with local guides offering trips for all skill levels.

Fishing Waters

Arkansas River

The main attraction. Gold Medal designation extends through the valley with public access at numerous points. Fish populations include healthy brown trout and rainbow trout, with some fish exceeding 20 inches.

Chalk Creek

Tributary entering near Mount Princeton. Smaller water with wild trout. Good option when the Arkansas is high or off-color.

Cottonwood Creek

Another tributary with small-stream fishing opportunities. Less pressure than the main river.

High Lakes

Alpine lakes in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness offer backcountry fishing adventures. Cutthroat and brook trout in pristine settings.

Fishing Methods

Fly Fishing

The Arkansas is classic freestone fly fishing water. Match-the-hatch fishing during hatches, nymphing between hatches, and streamer fishing for big browns. Wading and float fishing both productive.

Spin Fishing

Effective with small spinners and spoons. Good option for beginners or those without fly gear.

Float Fishing

Drift boats and rafts access water that's difficult to wade. Guides offer float trips covering miles of river.

When to Fish

Spring (March-May): Pre-runoff fishing can be excellent. Blue-winged olive hatches. Watch for rising water as snow melts.

Runoff (May-June): High, murky water from snowmelt. Challenging conditions. Tributaries fish better during peak runoff.

Summer (July-August): Flows drop, water clears. Caddis and pale morning dun hatches. Evening fishing is prime.

Fall (September-October): Excellent fishing. Brown trout become aggressive before spawning. Lower crowds.

Winter: Year-round fishing is possible. Midge fishing on warmer days. Fewer anglers, fish are concentrated.

Tips

Check flows. The Arkansas is tailwater below certain points, meaning flows are managed. Check dam releases before fishing.

License required. Colorado fishing license mandatory. Available online or at local shops.

Catch and release. Consider releasing fish, especially larger specimens, to maintain the fishery.

Respect private property. Much of the river is bordered by private land. Access only at designated public areas.

Try early or late. Summer midday can be slow. Dawn and dusk produce better action.
