The Rock

Quick Info

Height: About 190 feet above the surrounding area. Climbing: Prohibited—trails go around, not up. Access: Free, open daily. Hike distance: Various trails from 0.5 to 2+ miles.

The rock formation that gave Castle Rock its name rises prominently above downtown. Resembling a medieval castle turret, this rhyolite butte has been the town's landmark since settlers first arrived. While climbing the rock itself is prohibited, trails around it offer views and good photo opportunities.

The Formation

The rock is rhyolite, a volcanic rock formed millions of years ago. Erosion carved away the surrounding softer material, leaving this harder column standing. The castle-like shape—complete with what looks like a tower and ramparts—is entirely natural.

Hiking Trails

Several trails provide access to viewpoints around the rock:

Rock Park Trail: The most direct route from downtown. Moderate climb to viewpoints near the base. About 1.5 miles round trip.

Mitchell Gulch Trail: Longer loop through open space with views of the rock from multiple angles. Good for a longer outing.

Downtown connection: You can walk from historic downtown to the rock viewpoints in about 20-30 minutes.

Best Views

From below: Historic downtown provides classic views looking up at the rock. Good for photos with shops and streets in the foreground.

From the trails: The hiking trails offer closer views and different angles. Morning light often works best for photography.

From a distance: Driving on I-25, you can see the rock rising above the town. Look east from the highway around exits 181-184.

Tips

Don't try to climb it. Climbing the rock formation is prohibited and dangerous. People have been injured and rescued. Fines apply.

Bring water. The trails are exposed with little shade. Even short hikes can be hot in summer.

Start early in summer. Afternoon heat and thunderstorms make morning the best time for hiking.

Combine with downtown. Hike to the viewpoints, then walk down to downtown for lunch or browsing.
