Copper Mountain sits at the doorstep of excellent alpine hiking. The surrounding Tenmile Range offers everything from easy wildflower walks to challenging peak climbs, all accessible from the resort or short drives away.

From the Resort

Lift-Accessed Hiking

Take the American Eagle lift up and hike down, or use it to access alpine terrain without the initial climb. Views of the Gore Range and Tenmile Range from the top.

Village Trails

Easy walking trails around the base area. Good for families and casual strolls. Connect to the recreation path for longer walks.

Wheeler Lakes

Moderate, 7 miles round trip. Beautiful alpine lakes in a cirque. Wildflowers in July. Trailhead at Copper Mountain's west lot.

Mayflower Gulch

Easy to moderate, 4 miles round trip. Historic mining ruins and alpine scenery. Popular and accessible. Off I-70 between Copper and Leadville.

Ptarmigan Peak

Difficult, 8 miles round trip, 2,500 feet gain. 13,000+ foot peak with panoramic views. For experienced hikers only. Trailhead near the Dillon area.

Eagles Nest Wilderness

Wilderness area north of I-70 with numerous trailheads and backpacking options. More solitude than popular resort trails.

Tips

Start early. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Plan to be below treeline by noon.

Acclimate first. Most trails start above 10,000 feet. Altitude affects everyone. Take it easy on day one.

Bring layers. Weather changes quickly in the alpine. Pack a rain jacket and warm layer.

Wildflowers peak in July. Mid-July often brings the best wildflower displays at higher elevations.
