What to See
The museum spans two connected buildings: the original North Building (Gio Ponti, 1971) and the dramatic Hamilton Building (Daniel Libeskind, 2006). Plan 2-3 hours to see the highlights, longer if you're into it.
Western American Art: The museum's crown jewel. One of the country's best collections of art depicting the American West, from 19th-century landscapes to contemporary Native American artists. The Frederic Remington bronzes and Albert Bierstadt paintings alone are worth the visit.
Indigenous Art: A comprehensive collection spanning centuries and cultures. The museum has made significant efforts to work with tribal communities on interpretation and display. Look for the contemporary pieces that challenge Western perspectives.
Architecture: The Libeskind building is art itself. The titanium-clad exterior with sharp angles continues inside with unconventional gallery spaces. Love it or hate it, the building makes a statement.
Pro Tip: Start on the top floor and work your way down. You'll have more energy for the best galleries, and it's easier on your legs. The elevator lines get long later in the day.
Planning Your Visit
Best time to visit: Weekday mornings are quietest. Avoid the first Saturday (free day) unless you enjoy crowds. Friday evenings offer a more social atmosphere with extended hours until 8pm.
How long to spend: 2-3 hours for highlights, 4+ hours if you want to see everything. The museum is large enough to warrant multiple visits if you're local.
Food options: Palette's Restaurant serves upscale museum food (actually good, not typical cafeteria fare). The coffee bar in the lobby works for a quick break. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance in the Golden Triangle neighborhood.
Getting There
The museum sits on the edge of Civic Center Park, walking distance from the 16th Street Mall and light rail. The Cultural Center Garage underneath charges $2/hour with validation available.
Street parking on surrounding blocks is metered but competitive. The RTD light rail stops at Civic Center Station, a 5-minute walk away.
