South Table Mountain Hike

Quick Info

Location: East of downtown Golden. Castle Rock summit: 3.4 miles round trip, 700ft gain. Difficulty: Moderate. Highlights: Castle Rock formation, Denver skyline views. Dogs: Allowed on leash.

South Table Mountain is the twin of North Table Mountain, separated by the gap through which Golden sits. Like its sibling, it's a flat-topped mesa capped by ancient lava flows. The hiking is similar - moderate climbs to a mesa top with panoramic views - but South Table has its own personality, including the distinctive Castle Rock formation at its highest point.

South Table Mountain gets less traffic than North Table, making it a good choice if you want a quieter experience. The views of downtown Denver and the eastern plains are arguably better here, while North Table has the edge for mountain views.

Castle Rock

The most popular destination on South Table is Castle Rock, a prominent lava plug that rises from the mesa top. The short trail to the rock's base offers the best views on the mountain - you can see the Denver skyline clearly, and on good days, the view extends across the plains for miles.

Castle Rock itself is a technical climb requiring ropes and experience - don't attempt to scramble it. But the views from its base are the main attraction. It's a popular sunset hike with the Denver lights coming on as the sky darkens.

Trail Options

Castle Rock Trail (3.4 miles round trip): The main route starts from the Mesa Top trailhead and climbs to Castle Rock. Moderate difficulty with steady elevation gain. The most direct path to the best views.

South Mesa Trail (1.2 miles): A shorter option that reaches the mesa top without going all the way to Castle Rock. Good for a quick hike with views.

Rim trails: Once on the mesa top, various trails follow the rim offering different perspectives. You can create loops of varying lengths.

Getting There

Mesa Top Trailhead: Take CO-93 south from Golden and turn left on Ulysses Street (look for the trailhead sign). Small parking area that fills up on nice weekends.

Camp George West Trailhead: Access from the southeast side via Camp George West. Less crowded but longer approach to Castle Rock.

North vs South Table Mountain

South Table Mountain is better for:

  • Denver skyline views and eastern plains
  • Sunset hikes (faces east)
  • Fewer crowds
  • Castle Rock as a focal point destination

North Table Mountain is better for:

  • Mountain views to the west
  • Wildflower displays
  • More trail options and longer loops
  • Better facilities at the trailhead

Serious hikers do both in a day - they're close enough to make a "Table Mountain Double" a popular challenge.

Tips for Your Hike

Bring water: No water on the mountain. The exposed mesa top can be hot in summer.

Watch for afternoon storms: The mesa top is the highest point around - get down before lightning arrives. Summer afternoon storms are common.

Sunset timing: The Castle Rock area is popular for sunset views of Denver. Time your hike to arrive 30-45 minutes before sunset. Bring a headlamp for the descent.

Winter hiking: Trails can be icy and windswept in winter. Traction devices are helpful. The views of snow-capped peaks are spectacular on clear winter days.
