Button Rock Preserve

Quick Info

Distance: 5.4 miles round trip to reservoir. Elevation gain: ~700 feet. Difficulty: Moderate. Best time: Spring through fall. Note: Parking is limited - arrive early.

Button Rock Preserve is the best hiking near Longmont, offering a scenic trail through a canyon to Ralph Price Reservoir. The moderate hike follows the North St. Vrain Creek through pine forests and rocky terrain, ending at a beautiful mountain reservoir. It's a local favorite that draws hikers from across the Front Range.

The Trail

Sleepy Lion Trail: The main route follows the creek through the canyon. The trail is well-maintained but has rocky sections and moderate elevation gain. Most hikers complete it in 2-3 hours round trip.

Terrain: Mix of dirt trail, rocky sections, and some root-covered areas. Sturdy footwear recommended. The trail follows the creek closely in many sections, with nice water views.

The Reservoir: Ralph Price Reservoir is the destination. The deep blue water sits beneath rocky peaks - a rewarding turnaround point. No swimming or boating allowed (it's Longmont's water supply), but the views are excellent.

Difficulty Assessment

Moderate difficulty. The 700 feet of elevation gain is spread over 2.7 miles, making it manageable for most fit hikers. The rocky sections require some attention but aren't technical. Children who are experienced hikers can handle it.

Not recommended for: beginners looking for an easy walk, those with mobility issues, or very young children. The distance and terrain make it a real hike, not a stroll.

Planning Your Visit

Parking: Limited parking at the trailhead fills early, especially on weekends. Arrive before 8am on summer weekends. Once full, you'll be turned away - there's no overflow parking on the narrow road.

Hours: Open sunrise to sunset. The preserve is managed by the City of Longmont.

Fees: Free for Longmont residents with proof of residency. Small fee for non-residents.

Dogs: Not allowed. This is a water supply protection area.

Getting there: Drive west from Longmont on Highway 36 to Lyons, then follow signs to Button Rock. The road into the preserve is narrow and winding.

Tips

Arrive early: This cannot be overstated. Weekend parking fills by 8-9am in summer.

Bring water: No facilities on the trail. Bring more water than you think you need.

Check conditions: The trail can be icy in winter and muddy in spring. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common - start early.

Pack out trash: Leave no trace principles apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swim in the reservoir?

No. Ralph Price Reservoir is Longmont's drinking water supply. No swimming, wading, or water contact allowed.

Is there a shorter option?

You can turn around at any point. Some hikers go partway for creek views without completing the full hike to the reservoir.

Why no dogs?

Water supply protection. Dogs can contaminate the watershed that supplies Longmont's drinking water.

Is it crowded?

Very popular on weekends. Weekdays are much quieter. The limited parking actually helps control trail crowding.
