Ouray Jeep Trails

Quick Info

Season: Late June through September (snow dependent). Popular routes: Imogene Pass, Engineer Pass, Yankee Boy Basin. Difficulty: Moderate to extreme. Rentals: Available in Ouray and Silverton. Altitude: Most passes exceed 12,000 feet.

Ouray is the Jeep Capital of Colorado for good reason. More high-alpine 4x4 routes radiate from here than anywhere else in the state. These aren't just dirt roads—they're historic mining routes that climb to passes over 13,000 feet, thread between 14ers, and connect remote mountain towns.

The routes range from scenic drives suitable for cautious beginners to extreme trails that challenge experienced off-roaders. All require a capable vehicle, respect for the terrain, and awareness of rapidly changing mountain weather.

Imogene Pass (13,114')

The classic Ouray-to-Telluride crossing and the highest pass road in the San Juans. Moderate difficulty for experienced 4x4 drivers, with a few challenging shelf sections near the top.

Route: 18 miles from Ouray to Telluride. About 3-4 hours one way. Stunning views from the pass summit. Historic mining structures along the route.

Difficulty: Moderate. High clearance 4x4 required. Some steep, rocky sections. Not for beginners, but accessible to careful intermediate drivers.

Engineer Pass (12,800')

One of the more accessible alpine passes. Connects to the Alpine Loop linking Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City. Spectacular views with moderate technical difficulty.

Route: Part of the Alpine Loop. About 2 hours from Ouray to the pass summit. Continue to Silverton or Lake City for a full loop.

Difficulty: Moderate. Rocky in sections, but wide enough for passing. Good introduction to high-alpine 4x4 driving.

Yankee Boy Basin

Famous for summer wildflowers. This basin below Mount Sneffels offers some of Colorado's most photographed scenery. Access ranges from easy to extreme depending on how far you push.

Lower basin: Relatively easy access for high-clearance vehicles. Peak wildflower season is July. Stunning backdrop of 14,150-foot Mount Sneffels.

Upper sections: Technical terrain that gets progressively harder. Know your limits—turn around if the route exceeds your skills.

Other Notable Routes

Black Bear Pass: One of the most dangerous Jeep roads in Colorado. Extremely technical switchbacks with deadly exposure. Expert only—fatalities have occurred.

Cinnamon Pass (12,620'): Part of the Alpine Loop. Moderate difficulty, connecting to Lake City. Scenic alternative to Engineer Pass.

Ophir Pass: Relatively easy pass connecting to Telluride area. Good warm-up for more challenging routes.

Tips

Rent locally if inexperienced. Ouray has several Jeep rental outfits. They'll explain the routes, check your comfort level, and send you out appropriately equipped.

Weather changes fast. Afternoon thunderstorms are common above treeline. Start early, summit passes by noon, and descend before storms build.

Altitude affects vehicles too. Engines lose power above 10,000 feet. Cooling systems work harder. Don't push an overheating vehicle.

Know your limits. These trails claim vehicles every year. Turn around if conditions exceed your skill or vehicle capability. No route is worth a rollover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Jeep, or will my SUV work?

High clearance and 4WD are essential. True off-road capability (low range, locking differentials) helps on harder trails. Stock SUVs can handle easier routes; modified vehicles are better for technical terrain.

When do the trails open?

Snow-dependent, typically late June through September. Higher passes may open later. Check current conditions—snow can linger into July.

Can I take a guided tour?

Yes. Several companies offer guided Jeep tours for those who want to experience the trails without driving themselves. Good option for nervous drivers or unfamiliar vehicles.

What should I bring?

Full tank of gas, water, snacks, layers, rain gear, basic recovery gear. Cell service is nonexistent on most trails.

Are the trails one-way?

Most are two-way with wide spots for passing. Downhill traffic yields to uphill. Pull over safely when meeting other vehicles.
