Rosemount Museum

Quick Info

Location: 419 W 14th St, Pueblo. Tours: Tue-Sat, hourly from 10am-3pm. Admission: $10 adults, $8 seniors, $6 children. Duration: 1 hour guided tour. Style: 1893 Richardsonian Romanesque mansion.

Rosemount is one of Colorado's finest Victorian-era mansions, a 37-room pink volcanic stone house built in 1893 for the Thatcher family. What makes it exceptional is that nearly all original furnishings remain intact - you're seeing the house as the family actually lived in it, not a recreation.

The Thatcher brothers made their fortune in banking and ranching during Pueblo's boom years. Their mansion showcases the wealth and taste of Colorado's gilded age, with imported materials, custom woodwork, and the latest technologies of the 1890s.

The Tour

Tours are guided and last about an hour, covering three floors of the mansion. Docents share stories of the Thatcher family and the history revealed by the objects in each room.

Highlights include:

  • Ten fireplaces, each with unique imported tile
  • Original Tiffany and Handel light fixtures
  • Hand-carved mahogany staircase
  • Egyptian mummy in the third-floor museum room
  • Period clothing and personal effects of the family

The mummy is an unexpected curiosity - a souvenir from a Thatcher family member's travels that has become one of the museum's most talked-about artifacts.

Architecture

The Richardsonian Romanesque style features heavy stone construction, rounded arches, and asymmetrical design. The exterior is pink rhyolite stone from Castle Rock. Inside, different woods - oak, maple, mahogany - distinguish each room.

The house was remarkably advanced for its time, with central heating, indoor plumbing, and electricity throughout. The carriage house (now a gift shop) originally served as a stable.

Special Events

Rosemount hosts Victorian teas, holiday candlelight tours, and special programs throughout the year. The annual holiday decoration turns the mansion into a festive Victorian Christmas scene.
