Black Hawk is one of only three places in Colorado where casino gambling is legal. Located just 40 miles west of Denver through Clear Creek Canyon, this former mining town has transformed into a mountain gaming destination with large casino resorts.
The town sits at 8,500 feet in Gilpin County, adjacent to historic Central City. Colorado legalized limited stakes gambling here in 1991 to preserve historic buildings. The stakes limits were removed in 2009, and Black Hawk now features modern casino resorts alongside 19th-century mining architecture.
Beyond gaming, Black Hawk offers access to the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway and serves as a gateway to the high country. The drive from Denver through Clear Creek Canyon is scenic, winding past Golden and through dramatic rock formations.
